Michiana Road
Looking west down Michiana Road with Michiana Shores, Indiana, on the left and Michiana, Michigan on the right. Chicago, Illinois is roughly 40 miles due west across Lake Michigan from this point.
The borderline between Indiana and Michigan runs 105 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan east toward Ohio before suddenly turning at a right angle and dropping down for five miles. Indiana’s and Ohio’s northern boundaries just miss each other by such a short distance, thanks to a compromise that gives Indiana some lakefront property and gives Toledo to Ohio instead of Michigan. (More about the Michigan/Ohio borderline here.)
Michiana Shores is one of the few counties that observes Central Time while the entirety of Michigan is on Eastern Time. In theory, the house on the right should be an hour ahead, but it’s likely both sides of the street observes the time in Michigan City (CT).
